Luis Melliz has lived in Bellflower for over thirty years. He attended Ramona Elementary and graduated from Bellflower High School in 1999. Luis has served his community on many levels: as a youth coach, mentor to troubled youth, Lions club member, and as a mentor to incoming freshmen at Cerritos College through the PUENTE program. He believes that our youth need guidance, direction, and support in order to discover their future career paths.
As a community leader, he has stood up to powerful interests that believe in the status quo. His experience in the nonprofit sector as a Workforce Development Manager is the type of understanding that the board needs. His work with the realignment population is innovative as he ultimately creates partnerships with various union trades in order to establish stable employment and reduce recidivism rates. It is his love for community that drives his every move.
Luis understands the importance of access to higher education and believes that we all have the power to reach our full potential. In order for our future workforce to become competitive and adjust to a changing economy we must look for creative partnerships. As Sacramento politicians continue to make budget cuts, it’s the community colleges that must create innovative collaborations to meet the demands of our future workforce.
His goals include:
1. Ensure all students are transfer and workforce ready in order to compete in the global economy.
2. Ensure classes are available every semester so that students can transfer to four-year universities.
3. Engage the communities of Cerritos College Area 2 so there is involvement and participation between these entities.
On November 8th, please vote for Luis Melliz Cerritos College Board of Trustees, Area 2
